About Pierre Walter

Leadership experience from the frontline up.

I'm Pierre Walter Martin. In port operations I was known as Pierre Martin. As an operational leader, professional coach and consultant, my career has been shaped by people working in complex, high-pressure environments. My background combines more than 20 years of Australian port and terminal operations with professional coaching and behavioural-change training.

01The operational years

Built in Australian port and terminal operations.

My career began on the waterfront and progressed through operational, training and leadership roles across 24/7 environments.

  • Patrick Terminals and Hutchison Ports Australia
  • Frontline stevedoring and vessel operations
  • Team leadership and workforce training
  • Shift management across 24/7 operations
  • Heavy equipment and automated systems
  • Safety-critical incident response
  • Workforce relationships and accountability
  • Safety-critical decision-making
02Leading through change

Helping people stay effective when systems change.

A significant part of my operational experience involved leading people through technological and operational transition.

  • Automation and tele-operation
  • Autonomous equipment introduction
  • Technology transitions and new systems
  • Training operators on new equipment
  • Maintaining operational continuity through change
  • Helping people adapt to new ways of working
03From leading to coaching

An interest in what drives behaviour and change.

Over time, I became increasingly interested in what sits beneath the surface of performance, what drives behaviour, decision-making and the way people respond to pressure and change.

I am an SMJ Master Coach with the SMJ Coaching Institute.

That interest led to formal coaching development and, eventually, to Pierre Walter Consulting, a practice that brings operational credibility and coaching together in one place.

04How I work

Direct, calm and practical.

My style is direct, calm and practical. I ask questions, challenge assumptions and create space for people to think rather than simply telling them what to do.

My operational background means conversations remain connected to the reality of leadership: deadlines, personalities, competing priorities, safety, accountability and performance.
